Meet The 'Build Tiny' Family
Build Tiny is a small family business with big aspirations for Tiny Homes. In 2016/17, Gina designed and built her own Tiny House with Brother-in-Law Jason. The whole family got involved and had so much fun in the process. We saw a need for reliable, experienced Tiny House builders, and felt as though we would make the dream team. With Jason as a builder, Gina as a designer, Amy with her management experience, and parents Ian and Diane with their extensive experience in running their own business we decided to break all the rules and go into business together - and so Build Tiny Ltd was born! Since then we've taken on an incredible team of builders, cabinet makers and boat builders with exceptional skill and experience, meet the team down below...
Director, Builder LBP
Jason is a career builder who's been in the industry for around 20 years. His workmanship is second-to-none, having worked in a variety of sectors, predominantly residential building, and earthquake repairs and assessments - giving him a well-rounded understanding of the industry. Jason is a pleasure to work with, and somehow manages to walk the line between being a perfectionist, whilst still 'getting s**t done' efficiently. Jason's passion for building Tiny Houses began by helping his sister-in-law Gina build her first tiny home. He loved the challenge and saw the need for reputable, experienced builders in the community. Jase has since developed a comprehensive knowledge of Tiny House construction techniques and systems, and is constantly looking for new ideas and technologies. Having stepped down from an active role in Build Tiny in 2020, Jase now acts in a governance position as a director, as well as getting stuck in with the odd client delivery.
Amy is an organisational force to be reckoned with. Her background is in Early Childhood Education, and Hotel Management, and on top of that, she's a mum! Amy is involved in many things here a Build Tiny, including office management, quoting, accounts, procurement, client relations, health and safety and many other administrative tasks. Her passion for baking never goes amiss around the workshop. Amy and Jason have four adorable kids, Parker, Adalyn, Tanner and Gabrielle. Amy is an extremely resilient person, she and Jason are both ex Cantabrians, having lived through many of the Christchurch earthquakes and all their related challenges, they have now moved back to Katikati to be with their extended families. Amy helps out at Build Tiny in numerous ways, such as dealing with all email inquiries and calls, giving workshop tours, staging tiny homes for photo shoots and paying the bills. Amy is probably the most popular person in the working shop, being that she stocks the cookie jar AND pays the wages!
Cabinet maker / Craftsman / Actor
You may recognise Andy as the star of your favourite Build Tiny video tours. As tallented as he is on screen, Andy actually has a day job here at build tiny too. When he's not demonstrating how to open and close drawers for his many youtube fans, Andy is busy in the workshop building custom tiny house cabinetry. With a background in boat building, Andy's skills have been easily transferred to tiny house building. His understanding of the techniques required to build high quality lightweight and compact boats are exactly whats required for building tiny homes too! Being very outdoorsie the BOP region has plenty of opportunities to entertain Andy's love of the ocean, as a PADI advanced open water diver, keen surfer and avid rock climber.
Kelvin's been part of the Build Tiny team since April of 2019. Building buses in his past role, Kelvin brought a diverse skill-set and can-do attitude to the Build Tiny workshop. As part of our core build team, Kelvin is involved in almost all parts of the tiny house building process, bringing peoples tiny house dreams to life. His high standard of workmanship fits in well with our values as a company, as does his witty workshop banter. Kelvin also features in the occasional tiny house video tour, as does his adorable pup Maisie, and charming daughter Jorja. Kelvin is a recently retired local soccer veteran, and now gives back to the local community by teaching children's soccer.
Having retired from his demanding yet rewarding career in the Kiwifruit Industry at the end of 2017, Ian is now offering his skills and experience in a governance capacity as a director of Build Tiny. He brings with him a wealth of experience in business systems and operations which are applied to the production of tiny homes. He's not involved with the business on the day-to-day as he leads a busy semi-retired life looking after his lifestyle property and going on off-road cycling trips. When he is at the workshop, he's usually researching new tools and systems or tinkering with a spreadsheet. Ian can often be found behind the wheel of his Ford ranger with a tiny house in tow, having attended the delivery of numerous tiny homes across the country. Image: A very rare photo of Ian in that he is a) almost smiling, and b) not wearing lycra. Avid cyclists, Ian and Diane have cycled the length of New Zealand with many friends over the course of a few years, and have many more similar trips on the bucket list.
Workshop Manager, Builder LBP
As our workshop manager, Chris is all over everything from the quotes to the deliveries. Chris manages the schedules, the teams, the subcontractors, material deliveries, and even gets involved in the design process too. As a qualified licensed builder he gets on the tools every chance he gets and is passionate about building, particularly cladding systems. Having relocated with his wife from Wellington to work with us at Build Tiny, he fits right in with the team here due to his good nature and passion for hunting & fishing. With one of the most recognisable laughs you've ever heard, Chris keeps us all entertained with banter and ballads as he loves to break into song when a good tune comes on the radio.
Cabinet maker / Craftsman
We've had the pleasure of having Ray on our team since Jan 2019. His extensive background as a qualified cabinet maker made Ray a perfect fit. Over the last 20 years Ray has worked on the land as an orchard manger, tree surgeon, and business owner before going into the building sector. Ray has applied himself to custom furniture making, boat building, cabinetry, joinery, tiling, house renovation and now tiny house building. He loves it so much he spends his spare time renovating and building homes for his family. Ray and partner Maree who are also proud grandparents, with four children between them. With all his knowledge Ray is the go-to-guy in the workshop, and is always generous with his time teaching others new skills. Ray's quick-wit never goes a-miss - you can see it for yourself in multiple tiny house video tours that Ray features in!
Director, Designer, BDes IntAr
Gina's had a passion for small space design since completing her Interior Architecture Degree in 2010. Working professionally as a graphic designer since then, Gina took the plunge to design and build her own tiny house in 2016/17, lured by the freedoms of Tiny House living. She has since developed a deep understanding of the challenges facing the NZ Tiny House Community, as well as the practical requirements for building tiny homes in New Zealand. Gina is enthusiastic about helping others design their dream home, putting her 3D modelling and drafting skills to use designing beautiful custom homes for Build Tiny. Having been involved and 'on-the-tools' for every stage of her own build, Gina's pretty handy to have around the workshop, but don't ask her to drive a skew nail! Gina now focuses on all build tiny marketing, as well as designing custom tiny homes, talking with clients, developing the business and website, and filming/editing tour videos of all our builds.
Tiny House Designer BDes BAS
We pride ourselves in our ability to continue to produce highly customised, thoughtfully designed tiny homes. Thats where Karen comes in! Part biker-chick, part sophisticated designer, Karen has a background in small space architecture - both in New Zealand and the US. Karen is normally found working remotely from her home studio in Wellington with her pup Bella curled up at her feet. Karen has a passion for extraordinarily small spaces, falling in love with airstream motorhomes while living and working in the US, she even wrote a book about it! - Living The Airstream Life. Karen does an excellent job of listening to our clients needs, an interpreting that into design language with beautiful and liveable tiny house designs. Karen is a busy bee and on-top of her work with is, is also working towards her Masters of Architecture.
Being a family business it has been great to get another Airey on board. Hayden, Jason's charming older brother helped us out during a busy time as a contractor. When a full time position became available we immediately offered him a permanent role. Hayden is a great fit for Build Tiny, as he is a skilled joiner and an all round handy good guy. Everything Hayden builds is always to a high standard, he's a bit of a perfectionist, which is great for our clients. Hayden has fallen into a niche as our in-house roofer, so when you cant find Hayden around the workshop, it pays to look up! Originally from Waihi, he now calls Katikati home, where he lives with his two school age children. When Hayden isn't working on a project in his shed he is out camping in his retro caravan, or fishing out of his inflatable 'Blowie'.
